The angel said to Joseph in Matthew 1:21 “She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.”
Mary and Joseph did not have the liberty to name their first-born son. God made it clear that his name would be Jesus. Jesus is a combination of two Hebrew names, Yehovah and Yasha, which together mean “God saves.”
What a perfect name for this little baby. He was God, and he would grow up to save his people from their sins. And why did God send Jesus to save his people? Do you remember?
“For God so loved the world that he gave his only son” (John 3:16). The very name of Jesus, the name the angel told Joseph to give, is a testimony of God’s great love for his children.
