William Cowper on Dissapointment

William Cowper was a famous English poet in the 18th century. In one of his poems, called The Garden, Cowper, much like Solomon in Ecclesiastes, reflected on the inevitable disappointments of life:

“In chase of fancied happiness, still woo’dImage result

And never won. Dream after dream ensues;

And still they dream that they shall still succeed,

And still are disappointed.”

Thankfully, Cowper was a Christian and knew not to look for satisfaction in this life. Though he struggled intensely (even attempting suicide several times), he survived life’s disappointments and made it home to paradise 218 years ago this month.
